Neuralink First Consumer Device: Non-Medical Timeline and Details
  • Neuralink has not announced a date for a non-medical device for healthy people.
  • Internal projections reported by Bloomberg in July 2025 targeted approval of the medical Telepathy device by 2029 and Blindsight by 2030, with 20,000 implants a year by 2031.
  • Any consumer version would build on Telepathy, the implant now used by people with paralysis in Neuralink's trials.

Telepathy: from medical use toward consumers

Telepathy is the implant in Neuralink's clinical trials. As of October 2025, 13 people with quadriplegia were using it to control computers and robotic arms by thought, and Neuralink reported 21 participants on January 28, 2026. Participants have typed at up to 40 words per minute, according to Neuralink's January 2026 update. The R1 surgical robot implants the device, which carries 1,024 electrodes on flexible threads (64 in early implants, 128 thinner threads in later ones).

Elon Musk named the product Telepathy to point toward communication from mind to device and, one day, mind to mind. Participants like Noland Arbaugh use it daily for gaming and 3D modeling, and Neuralink reported zero serious device-related adverse events as of January 2026. Neuralink has submitted early human data to the New England Journal of Medicine.

What a consumer device might do

Neuralink has not described a consumer product. Musk has talked about uses for healthy people: typing faster than a keyboard, gaming with quicker reactions, and controlling phones, computers, and augmented reality by thought. He has also described adding inputs such as audio, and eventually other senses, through stimulation. The current implant is a coin-sized, wireless device placed in the skull, and any consumer version would likely use the same platform.

Timeline

Neuralink has not announced a date for a non-medical device. Internal projections reported by Bloomberg in July 2025 targeted approval of the medical Telepathy device by 2029 and Blindsight by 2030, and 20,000 implants a year by 2031. Those projections cover medical uses only.

Medical expansion comes first. The VOICE speech trial implanted its first participants in early 2026, and Neuralink has said Blindsight trials would follow; none had launched as of October 2026. Trial sites include Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, with a UAE site at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi recruiting.

Manufacturing and cost

Neuralink builds devices in-house at its California and Austin facilities. Investors in the $650 million Series E in 2025 included ARK Invest and Sequoia Capital, according to Neuralink. Musk has said he wants the device to become affordable, but Neuralink has not published a price.

Elon Musk's reasons

Musk argues that a high-bandwidth link would help people keep up with AI and calls the goal "symbiosis with AI." He has predicted that early adopters would gain an edge in fields from esports to design. None of these uses has been tested in healthy people.

This article was first published in October 2025 and corrected in October 2026; the latest patient count is on the patient table.
